Backpack Buddy was launched in 2004 to provide weekend food to Anderson Co. children living in "food insecure" homes.
We provide food and volunteers to fill and deliver 5 to 10 backpacks a week to local schools.
The program has grown to as many as 225 bags per week, and we provide it to all six public schools.
In January 2011 we became a 501(c)3 tax-free organization.
We remain fully managed by volunteers and fully funded by donations and grants.
Both food and monetary donations are accepted.
Our food is purchased in bulk in order to use monetary contributions as wisely as you can.
Family Resource staff at each school provide us with the number of bags of food needed every week.
The bags are made between Monday and Wednesday evenings and are delivered to the schools on Thursday.
Only Family Resource staff know who received the food and there is nothing in the bag to say to the student who provides the food.
The program is as anonymous as possible.
